On the cold morning of Jan. 28, 1986, shortly after liftoff at Cape Canaveral, the space shuttle Challenger exploded into a giant fireball over the Atlantic as the nation watched in horror. All seven crew members aboard were killed, including Christa McAuliffe, a 37-year-old teacher from New Hampshire, who had been chosen by NASA as the first “private citizen” to go into space. This e-single, a collection of articles from The New York Times, recounts critical events surrounding the disaster.  In its aftermath, a presidential commission concluded that the accident was caused by weakened O-rings, the gaskets that seal rocket joints.
